Interval House is one of the few domestic violence agencies in Connecticut that offers Civil Court advocacy in addition to Criminal Court advocacy.

Family Violence Victim Advocate Program (Criminal Court)

Family Violence Victim Advocates (FVVAs) educate clients about Criminal Court and advocate for clients within the system, but they do not offer legal advice.

• FVVAs can help a client obtain an attorney, if needed.

• FVVAs can help clients understand law enforcement and Criminal Court procedures throughout the court process:

  • Protective Orders

  • Information and support, and on-going services

  • Police mandate to arrest. For example, automatically arresting both parties at the scene of a "domestic," is NOT the law. The police arrest the people they believe to have committed a crime.

  • Family Violence Prevention and Response Act of 1986 and amendments

• With the client’s permission, an FVVA can provide crucial information to a State’s Attorney or judge or any other appropriate court personnel (e.g. bail commissioner, probation officers, public defenders).

Legal Advocate Program (Civil Court)

• Legal Advocates educate clients and advocate for them within the system, but they do not offer legal advice

• They can help a client

• Obtain an attorney

• Understand restraining orders, custody and visitation rights and divorce procedures
